CIVIC DUTY

* All Civic Duty Papers are Due TWO WEEKS prior to the last day of classes

 

Civic Duty Extra Credit Opportunity

*Each student may complete ONE CAREER and ONE NONPROFIT Civic Duty portfolio

Each Civic Duty Portfolio will be assigned extra credit points between 0 and 100

Extra credit points are assigned based on adherence to the guidelines below


Overview:

Assignment Details:

  • Up to 2 'experiences' per course/student/semester

  • Each experience requires a portfolio including a formal paper as outlined in the sections below

  • Up to 100 points per paper - total of 200 possible points per semester
  • Points will be added in with overall course point totals
  •  

Volunteer Assignments:

  • Students choose location
  • Location should be a non-profit volunteer or career related organization
  • Example businesses are listed on this page. The Career Advisor in the CAP center can assist in locating an appropriate business
  • A minimum of 10 hours of non-paid work is required for each experience
  • The Civic Duty Documentation Template can be downloaded or the organization may provide proof of hours worked in a formal letter
  • Each Experience must be completed at a different location.

Please Note:

  • Economy does not count as an economic term for this assignment
  • On average 5 points are awarded for completing the experience and the portfolio
  • The remaining points are awarded based on the economic detail provided within the formal paper and the overall professional appearance of the portfolio
  • Points are taken off for grammar
  • Papers that do not attempt to relate the experience to economics receive zero points.
  • ALL papers are DUE TWO WEEKS PRIOR to the LAST DAY of CLASSES for the semester

 

Portfolio Turn-in:

Each student should turn in a portfolio organized as follows:

  1. Chosen name of volunteer location
  2. Contact name and phone number of supervisor during volunteer experience
  3. Time Log detailing hours worked - signed by supervisor
  4. 4-5 page formal paper detailing the experience, economic correlations, and any economic knowledge gained
  5. A statement as to the worthiness of the experience in your academic career

Paper Assignment:

Semantics - Each paper should be :

  • 4-5 pages

  • double spaced
  • TimesNewRoman 12 point font
  • utilize correct grammar
  • demonstrate excellent form

Content - Each paper should:

  • Utilize no more than 1-2 paragraphs to tell where the student volunteered and describe the basic experience/day

  • The remainder (majority) of the paper should discuss how the experience relates to the economic terms and concepts covered in the course

Syllabus Policy:

  1. Extra credit: Extra Credit is not given on an individual basis; if offered it is outlined in the syllabus or course website and made available to the entire class.  There are no other exceptions or help given outside of the ‘normal’ course experience. 

    1. Any student completing activities as prescribed below will receive extra credit given as 0-100 points.

                                                               i.      Completing 10 hours of career/community volunteer work and submitting a portfolio that includes all required items (time log, formal paper relating the experience to technology, etc). Papers are due 2 weeks prior to the last day of classes. Each student may complete 2 papers; 1 career related and 1 nonprofit related. Examples are available on my website.
