COURSE JOURNAL GUIDELINES:

All business professionals should be aware of current events in their local, national, and international environment. Understanding basic economic principles will assist students in learning how various news events affect their individual lives.

 Each student will maintain a current events journal throughout the semester.  Journals will consist of a collection of articles from reputable newspapers, journals, and media sources (USA Today, Newsweek, Wall Street Journal, Fortune, or local newspapers) and economic graphs based on the selected articles. 

 Articles should be selected based upon their demonstration of topics covered in class.   

  Journals will be collected and graded at random times throughout the course – 3 times including completed journal at the end of the semester.  Thus, students are to keep their journals updated and bring them to each class period.  If we have covered a chapter in class it is expected to be present in the student’s journals.

 Each Journal should be organized as follows:

  • Kept in a separate notebook from class notes
    • The notebook should be NO LARGER THAN ˝ inch in size.
    • All papers MUST be hole punched and inserted into 3 ring format folder
    • The last page of this syllabus should be the first page in the journal (Template on website)
    • 4 Tab dividers should be used for the major sections listed below (the cover page does not count as a section)
    • Make shift tabs can be used as tabs within tabs for the article section

    • At the end of the semester the journal will consist of: 3 economic statements, 7 graphs, 10 articles, summary

  2. Cover Page indicating chapters and economic terms illustrated, students identification {Template on my website}
  3. Tab 1: Economic Statement pages: Pages should contain: {Template on my website}
    1. Top line of page (Chapter and Term illustrated and Name of Student)
    2. Reference of article
    3. Economic Statement

                                                               i.      The student should write two or three sentences illustrating an economic statement or analysis for each article.  Credit will NOT be given for article summaries {Examples are on my website}

  1. Tab 2: Graph pages: Pages should contain: {Template on my website}

    1. Top line of page (Chapter and Graph illustrated and Name of Student)
    2. Reference of article (Tabbed number in Article Section or URL)
    3. Top half of page: Required Graph depicting movement
    4. Bottom half of page: Statement from article that is being graphed
    5. For the graphs that you present in class - you may insert your PowerPoint slides in place of the above items
  2. Tab 3: Journal articles
    1. Each article should be tabbed and numbered
  3. Tab 4: Journal Summary {not completed until end of the semester}
    1. Upon completion of the journal each student should include a 1 to 2 page typed summary in the form of a letter or memo.  The summary is a candid expression of the students experience throughout the course, insights gained, and interest in economics.  Correct letter or memo format is expected. Grade is derived from inclusion in project portfolio, correct memo or letter format, and articulate verbiage. The specific comments are not considered in grade.

 Three class periods have been designated as Graph Presentation days.  Students will present their graphs to the class.  These graphs should be derived from an actual newspaper article – not one printed from the internet. This is the students chance to make positive and normative statements and demonstrate their newly gained knowledge of the workings of the world in which we live.  Presentations will be graded according to the GRAPH PRESENTATION GUIDELINE included in this syllabus.

 JOURNAL EVALUATION

                8%           Progress of Journal (4% x 2)

                4%           Completed Journal

                12%        TOTAL

 

Please Note:         -The Journal will be reviewed and graded for each assigned item every time it is taken up.

                                -The COMPLETED JOURNAL will be taken up on the FIRST DAY OF DEBATES.
