Position Statement Guidelines: Position Statement Goal: To assist you in narrowing your focus on the topic in order to present a well organized and thought out position that you can present and defend.
Remember Well Written Position Statements: Make your position statement narrow enough that you do not have to research everything to do with your topic but broad enough that it does not cripple you in rebuttal to your opponent's position.

SAMPLE: Position Statements
Topic: Prostitution CON: Legalizing prostitution will put an extra burden on our already strained healthcare system resulting in decreased disposable income, loss of human capital, and ultimately a depressed GDP. PRO: Legalizing prostitution will improve women's health and result in lower costs of healthcare ultimately leading to increased disposable income. Legalization of prostitution will also increase jobs, expand commerce, and lead to an increase in GDP and tax revenue.
Topic: Fat Tax CON: A fat tax will negatively effect the aggregate economy by placing undo burden on households and firms. PRO: Imposing a Fat Tax would promote healthier lifestyles in America resulting in increased productivity.
Topic: Diesel verse Hybrid Diesel: In spite of seemingly prohibitive up-front costs, using diesel-powered engines will have vast positive long-range economic effects - on both an individual and an aggregate level. Hybrid: The expansion of the automotive industry to include hybrid cars will help improve economic growth within the U.S.
Topic: Extending Unemployment Benefits CON: Extending unemployment benefits for 20 weeks would be detrimental to the labor force and the economy. PRO: Extending unemployment benefits an additional 20 weeks will bolster the economy in a variety of ways including increased confidence, spending, productivity, and economic growth.
