Greetings, Speakers!
I hope you are all excited as I am for our upcoming Course Redesign Workshop- just a few, short days away! By now you should have received your hotel confirmation from Joanne Foster; if you have not received this, please advise and we can re-send!
Our festivities will kick-off at 6:30 PM on Thursday, September 24th with our Speaker Dinner at Scarpetta (the Italian restaurant located in the hotel). The reservation has been made under the name “Pearson”. If you are arriving on a later flight, please feel free to stop by after checking into your room at the hotel! The dinner will serve as an opportunity for all of the speakers to meet each other, go over in detail, the agenda (attached), and ask/answer any questions you may have about the workshop.
Please note that if you have made any adjustments to your power point presentations (since sending to myself & Karen), please bring a copy of these, whether on your laptop or a jump drive with you. We will pre-load all of your presentations onto the computers in your designated speaking room and we want to make sure we have the most up-to-date version for you.
Following the conference, I will be sending a follow up e-mail that will outline the reimbursement process for your incidentals while traveling with us. So please be sure to hang on to all of your receipts for parking, transportation, etc.!
In the mean time, should you have any additional questions leading up to the workshop, please do not hesitate to contact any of us.
Thanks & looking forward to meeting all of you soon!
Best,
Katie

GENTLE REMINDER:

· 17 Science (12 Biology and 4 Chemistry and 1 Physics)
· 21 English
· 59 Math

· 25 ‘other’ and high level administrators
And here (again) are the small group assignments. You will simply be prepared with 2-3 questions or comments related to your small session topic below to get the discussion going.

Subject: RE: Miami Course Redesign Speaker UPDATES and DEADLINE
Greetings Course Redesign Speakers,
I hope your summer has been a relaxing one….and less rainy than here in Boston! Thanks to everyone for all the work on the slides and bios this summer.
GREAT NEWS!! To date, we’ve registered an unexpected record high of 112 faculty:
· 43 in Math
· 21 in English
· 13 in World Languages
· 13 in Science
· 11 in Econ/Accounting
· 11 in other (deans, heads of Developmental, Title III coordinators….)
The demand has been so high that we’re extending the registration period and re-contracted with the Fontainebleau Hotel for more rooms!
Here’s what’s next:
· BIOS – see attached. I believe we’re missing Valerie, Eileen, Kristy and Buffie. Am I right??
· PPTs – I believe I haven’t seen Susan, Eileen, Pat and Buffie. Is that correct?
· Small Group assignments – see attached SPEAKERS excel file (second tab) for assignments. As co-facilitators of a group, you will be expected to lead a discussion on that particular topic, ie, ask questions of the audience to get things going, bring your experience to bear on the topic, and enable lots of peer-to-peer sharing in the group.
· Updated attendee list and questionnaires from ~30 attendees – with more on their way….
DEADLINE for submitting FINAL BIOS, PPTs and (optional) handouts to KATIE MORAN by email: Friday Sept 4th.
Please email or call me immediately if there are any questions or comments – Katie, Carolyn, Joanne and I are here to help! Get ready for the best yet Course Redesign Workshop we’ve ever had the honor to conduct – you are a huge part of this!
Cheers for now,
Karen

Speaker guidelines for your 45-minute presentation on Fri Sept 25:
· Spend 30 minutes presenting + 15 minutes for Q&A = 45 minutes total for each speaker
· Use 6 - 10 slides max
· Describe your institution (enrollment, location, etc) in one or two sentence – don’t do a slide describing this
· A slide or two on the problem you were trying to solve
· A slide on the structure of your course – traditional and redesigned (with model)
· A slide on the plan for redesign – what did you do?
· A slide on the use of quizzing – for example, 2 per week with automated grading and the possibility of taking the quiz 4 times
· A slide, for example, on the use of streaming video for online lectures from software with in class problem solving groups with student
· 1-2 slides on your learning outcomes:
n How did you measure it?
n What did you learn?
n If possible, what kinds of cost reductions were possible?
n Other measures of success?
n What, if anything, you plan to do next?
· Greater refinements
· Enlarging enrollment in the course – the software handles much of the grading so that faculty member can handle more students…
· Don’t hide the issues that happened…talk about the problems, talk about how resolved this…
· Focus on the software…Tell what you used – but don’t show the software
· Tell how you use it
· Tell how it changed the way students learn the topic
· Tell how it contributed to solving the academic or resource problem you had identified
· If there are questions about the software such as how to establish quizzes, say that there will be software demos later this morning and in the afternoon
· Don’t get into solving their particular problem
· Say that Pearson tech people are here and they can be the most helpful on that issue
· Be sure to leave time for questions and discussion
· If you don’t know the answer to a question, refer to a tech person or to Karen or Carolyn
